Mother’s Day Facts

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and we have found some fun facts about this special day for you.

Did you know that…….?

The first recorded record of Mother’s Day stems from ancient Greece. There, they held a spring festival which was dedicated to the mother of Gods, Rhea.

annajarvisWhat is now known as Mother’s Day was introduced in 1907 by Anna Jarvis of Virginia. In an effort to honor her deceased mother, on May 12, 1907 two years after her death, Anna held a memorial for her mother and started a campaign to recognize “Mother’s day”.

It wasn’t until 1914 that the US officially declared Mother’s Day a holiday.

As of 2009, there are an estimated 85.4 million mothers in the US.

Over time, Anna Jarvis was dissatisfied by the commercialization of Mother’s Day and fought hard to eliminate it.

  • The first Mother’s Day was May 10, 1908.
  • Mother’s Day always falls on the second Monday in May.
  • 141 Million cards are sent each year in celebration of Mother’s Day.
  • It is the second most gift-giving Holiday in line to Christmas.
  • Hallmark began producing Mother’s Day cards in the early 1920’s.
  • The average age of NEW moms is 25, in 1970 it was 21.
  • 4.3 babies are born each second. Point 3? We aren’t sure either.
  • The oldest mom to give birth comes from Italy. Rosanna Dalla Corte was 63 years of age at the time of birth.
  • The most popular birth month is July, with the most popular birthday being Tuesday.
  • The most popular birthday is October 5th, can you guess why? It’s nine months after New Year’s Eve!!!
